The Premarital Counseling Specialist program was created for helping professionals who want to go beyond wedding preparation, compatibility conversations, communication exercises, and traditional premarital checklists.
Over 16 weeks, students learn how to examine the individuals entering marriage, the histories and expectations they carry, the relational system they are creating, the vulnerabilities that could become future points of fracture, and the capacities the couple will need when marriage places their relationship under pressure.
The goal is not to predict whether a marriage will succeed. The goal is to recognize meaningful vulnerabilities while there is still time to do something about them.

This program begins with a deeper one: What kind of marriage are these two people already creating?
The Premarital Counseling Specialist program prepares helping professionals to move beyond traditional compatibility discussions, premarital checklists, and surface-level marriage preparation. Students learn to assess the individuals entering marriage, identify emerging relational vulnerabilities, formulate what is occurring beneath presenting problems, select interventions according to the mechanisms maintaining those problems, and evaluate how the couple functions when marriage-relevant capacities are placed under relational demand.
The goal is not to predict whether a marriage will succeed. The goal is to identify meaningful vulnerabilities early enough for informed, preventive intervention.
Intended participants
Counselors, therapists, relationship professionals, pastors, clergy, ministry leaders, coaches, and other helping professionals who prepare, counsel, educate, coach, mentor, or support couples before marriage.
The program provides specialized professional education. It does not confer state licensure, expand a participant's legally authorized scope of practice, or authorize regulated clinical practice outside the participant's existing professional scope.

Positioning
Premarital Counseling Should Do More Than Prepare Couples to Say “I Do.”
Many couples enter marriage having discussed money, children, sex, religion, communication, and family.
But discussing a subject does not necessarily mean a couple has developed the capacity to manage it.
A couple may agree about money until one partner’s family needs financial help.
They may believe they communicate well until one partner feels criticized.
They may describe themselves as sexually compatible until desire changes, pregnancy occurs, illness enters the relationship, sexual pain develops, or one partner experiences rejection.
They may believe family boundaries are clear until loyalty becomes costly.
They may believe they resolve conflict well when what they have actually learned is how to avoid it.
And they may both sincerely believe they are ready for marriage because neither has encountered the conditions under which their relational functioning begins to change.
The Premarital Counseling Specialist program trains professionals to investigate what lies beneath the answers.
Distinction
This Is Not Another Premarital Checklist Course
Students are trained to move through an increasingly sophisticated professional process.
- Discover what is actually present.
- Assess and formulate what the evidence appears to mean.
- Identify the mechanism maintaining the problem.
- Select interventions that fit that mechanism.
- Evaluate whether new learning produces actual behavioral change.
And ultimately: examine what happens when marital capacity is placed under relational demand.
The student is not simply learning more questions to ask engaged couples. The student is learning how to think differently about the marriage that is forming.

Module I
Discovery
Learning to See What the Couple May Not Yet See
Students begin by moving beyond surface compatibility and learning how to investigate the relationship that is already developing. The emphasis is disciplined discovery: separating observation from interpretation, identifying assumptions, examining relational meaning, exploring the individuals and histories entering marriage, and recognizing where apparently ordinary differences may carry deeper significance.

Module II
Formulation
Turning Information Into Understanding
Knowing more about a couple is not the same as understanding the couple. Students learn to integrate history, self-report, partner report, observation, structured assessment, expectations, relational agreements, trust, power, protective responses, and recurring interaction into a coherent formulation.
Students are introduced to The Crack™, the emerging relational vulnerability through which repeated difference can acquire negative meaning and begin reorganizing the relationship.
Module III
Intervention
Treat the Mechanism, Not Merely the Symptom
Students move beyond the assumption that every relationship problem requires more communication. They examine sexuality, desire, biological and medical contributors, fidelity vulnerabilities, money, sacrifice, family loyalty, boundaries, individual versus relational problems, professional scope, referral, and treatment sequencing.

Module IV
Before They Say “I Do,” Prove They Can Do Marriage
The Marriage Readiness Laboratory
Everything learned in Modules I through III prepares students for Module IV. At this stage, understanding is no longer enough. Students learn to distinguish knowledge about marriage from demonstrated capacity for marriage and to examine how relational functioning changes when meaningful marital capacities are placed under demand.
Assessment
Premarital Assessment Training
Students will be introduced to the program’s premarital assessment process as part of their training.
The assessment is not treated as a compatibility test, a prediction of marital success, or a substitute for professional judgment.
Students learn how structured assessment information can identify areas requiring deeper exploration, reveal differences between partners, generate better questions, and contribute to a broader understanding of the relationship when considered alongside interview data, history, observation, and demonstrated functioning.
An assessment should tell the professional where to look more carefully, not what to think automatically.

Delivery & Format
Premarital Counseling Specialist is delivered through Holmes Digital Campus as live online professional training.
The sixteen-week program includes:
- One two-hour live class each week
- Four instructional modules comprising sixteen lessons
- Faculty teaching and demonstration
- Premarital case studies and guided formulation
- Applied assessment and intervention exercises
- Professional discussion and reflection
- Faculty feedback
Students select one live section and remain in that section throughout the program. All class times are scheduled in Eastern Time under the America/New_York time zone.

Completion Requirements
To be awarded the Premarital Counseling Specialist Certificate, students must:
- Attend and participate in the live instructional program
- Complete all required assignments across the four modules
- Participate in assigned case discussions and applied exercises
- Demonstrate understanding of ethics, confidentiality, boundaries, documentation, referral, and professional scope
- Complete the final course assessment or competency demonstration
- Satisfy all financial obligations
- Maintain professional and ethical conduct
- Receive faculty approval for certification
Enrollment, attendance, payment, or course completion alone does not guarantee certification.

Admissions Requirements
Certification is competency-based and subject to faculty approval.
Students must remain within the limits of their lawful professional role, training, credentials, jurisdiction, ethical responsibilities, and supervision requirements. The course does not confer professional licensure, authorize the diagnosis or treatment of mental illness, or expand a student's existing legal or professional scope.
A minimum of ten enrolled students is required to activate a section. Maximum total program enrollment is sixty students. Saturday and Tuesday are offered as section options; neither is a guaranteed active section before the minimum enrollment is reached.
Live classes are not recorded. Students are expected to attend the section in which they are enrolled and may not routinely move between sections without administrative approval.
Refund, transfer/gift, and late-registration terms are governed by the Holmes Training Academy institutional enrollment agreement and published policy in force at the time of registration.
If you are uncertain whether this program fits your practice, the Registrar's Office will advise you before you commit.
